Install an Agent - General Instructions

 

The Atera agent monitors the availability, performance and health of the workstation\server. This allows Atera to alert you when a critical system or resource is down, degraded, or has reached a predefined threshold parameter.

There is no limit to the number of agents that can be installed either on servers or workstations. Agents can be installed in different ways. We will start by looking at how to download an agent to your own computer. 

To download an agent to your computer:

  1. Click the + sign in the top right of the screen to open the drop-down menu.

  2. Then select Agent Installer > Download. The agent is downloaded to your computer.
  3. See 'Installing the agent' (below) for instructions on installing the downloaded agent.

 

To install an agent on your customer's computer:

  1. Navigate to Customers > specific customer.
  2. Select Devices > All.
  3. Click Actions > Agent Installer (Customer) > Share.

  4. Send the link to your customer with instructions to follow the next steps.

Installing the agent:

  1. After you download the agent,  follow the prompts on your browser.
  2. Open the Atera Agent Setup executable file and follow any prompts until the Installation Wizard appears.

    Note: If you are using a customer predefined shareable link, then the name will appear here, in place of 'undefined'.

  3. You are now ready to install the agent via any of the installation methods. You can view the installation steps of each one of these methods below.

Single Agent Installation

This installation mode allows you to deploy a single agent on a local device.

To install a single agent:

1. Select the Single Agent Installation deployment method by checking the box.
 
2. Click Install.
When the Single Agent Installation successfully completes, the Installation Finished Successfully message appears.

 

Note: Another option is to install the agent with the MSI Agent Installer. The MSI agent installer  automatically assigns individual agents to the customer. Click here for more details.
 

Multiple Agents Installation

This installation mode will automatically install agents on the entire network.

To install multiple agents:

1. Select the Multiple Agents Installation deployment method by checking the box.
2. Click Open.

The Agent Deployment Tool screen displays – see tables below for description of parameters and functions.

Number Description
1. Domain Name Identified Automatically
2. User Name User Name of the Admin User
3. Password Password of the Admin User
4. Scan Local Network Allows you to scan the entire local network for available devices
5. Scan IP Range Allows you to scan additional networks based on IP addresses outside of the local network.
Number Description
1. Computer Name Refers to the name of the computers available in the network.
2. IP Address Refers to the IP addresses of the computers available in the network
3. Operating System Refers to the operating system installed on the computer.
The Legend shows the status of the installation.
3. You can search for available devices in two different ways. The first is by scanning the local network.
  • Click Scan Local Network
  • After a few seconds all of the devices in the network will be discovered.
Alternative Method
The second way is to search for devices by IP Address range.
  • Click Scan Ip Range
  • The Add IP Address Range dialog box displays
  • In the From and To fields enter starting and ending IP Address Range
  • Click Search
The Network will be discovered.
4. In the left section, select the devices to install the agent on.

Note: Before hitting the install button, make sure the RPC is open.

Optionally, run the following command to apply these changes:

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)" new enable=yes

5. Click the arrows to move your selected devices to the right section for installation.

Note: The system will verify that the Admin User Name and Password supplied is applicable for each device. If there are devices that have different credentials, you will need to run the installation tool on these devices again with the correct credentials.

Within 3 to 5 minutes all agent devices will be installed.

Logon Script Installation

After running the Multiple Agents Installation, it is recommended to install the Atera Logon Script on the Domain Controller Server.

This will enable the installation of the Agent on each new device that is added to the network.

To install the Atera logon script:

Note: Only Domain Controllers can run Logon Script Installation.

1. Select the Logon Script Installation deployment method by checking the box.

2. Click Install.

Add the following details:

  • Domain
  • Administrative Username
  • Password

3. Click OK.

The installation will be initiated. After a few seconds, a popup window with the system path that includes the installation script and agent exe file, will appear.

A text file will also pop up with a short explanation on how to implement the script.
4. Copy the content of the file to your existing logon script.
Any new workstation or server that joins the network will automatically download an Atera agent and will be monitored and managed by the Atera system.
