In addition to enabling monitoring of your customers' computers and servers (via installed agents), Atera also enables monitoring of printers, RAIDs, routers, switches, and other SNMP devices.
The first step in monitoring SNMP devices is adding the devices to Atera. Learn how to add new SNMP devices. Once your devices have been added, you can manually add OIDs (Object Identifiers) for the specific parameters you wish to monitor on your devices. Additionally, Atera automatically monitors some specific parameters on printers as well as Linux-based devices.
Another convenient and time-saving option is to create SNMP monitoring templates, which can be easily applied to all SNMP devices you wish to monitor. You can create specific templates for monitoring of different device types. For example you can create a 'printer monitoring template' as well as a 'switch monitoring template' etc. This article explains how to:
Create an SNMP template from a device's OID configuration
Apply an SNMP Template to a device
Create an SNMP Template
You can create an SNMP monitoring template that can be applied to your SNMP devices.
To create a new SNMP Template:
1. From Admin, on the side panel, click SNMP Templates
The SNMP Templates page appears.
2. Click New template
The New SNMP Template form appears.
3. Fill in the form:
- Enter a Template Name
- Enter a Description (optional)
- Select the SNMP Device Type you wish to monitor
- Enter a MIB Source URL (optional)
4. When done, click Save
The SNMP Template has been created.
5. Add OIDs to the new template (Learn more about adding OIDs)
Note: The OID Values provide near, real-time status of the specific OID on the device. When adding an OID here, you will see the OID number displayed along with its current value on the device. The Monitored OIDs is where you can set up alert conditions to receive alerts when the Condition Value is matched.
6. When done, click Save
The OIDs are added, and the new template is ready to be applied to SNMP devices.
Create an SNMP template from a device's OID configuration
You can also create an SNMP template from a device's OID configuration.
To create an SNMP template from a device:
1. From the Devices page (on the side panel), click on the specific SNMP device you wish to monitor.
2. Click Save as SNMP Template
3. Fill in the New SNMP Template form:
- Enter a Template Name
- Enter a Description (optional)
- Select the SNMP Device Type you wish to monitor
- Enter a MIB Source URL (optional)
4. Click Save
The new template is created, and can be found on the SNMP Templates page.
Apply an SNMP Template to a device
The next step is to apply the SNMP monitoring Template to the specific SNMP devices you wish to monitor.
To apply an SNMP Template to a device:
1. From the Devices page (on the side panel), click on the specific SNMP device you wish to monitor.
The device console page appears.
2. Click on Import SNMP Template
The Import SNMP Template page appears.
3. In the My SNMP Templates tab, click Select, next to the specific template you wish to apply.
Note: Alternatively, you can select the Existing Device tab, to import the OID monitoring configuration from an existing device and apply to your device.
4. Then click Next
5. Select the desired import and override options, then click Import
The SNMP Template is now applied to the device, and monitoring has begun.
Note: It may take up to 2 minutes for the OIDs Values to populate, and when applicable, alerts will appear in the device console as well as on the Alerts page.
