While it's awesome that we've introduced new 4 add-ons, some of you may be unable to activate XDR (Extended Detection and Response) or MDR (Managed Detection and Response). But why? This article is for users who want to use Bitdefender on their own personal/business devices.
The scenario
A customer tenant (the default MSP parent company) is automatically created for you when activating a Bitdefender account. Let's call this the 'parent' tenant.
XDR and MDR (our 2 new awesome Bitdefender add-ons) automatically include ATS (Advanced Threat Security — also awesome).
The hiccup
If you've added devices to the 'parent' tenant (i.e., for testing purposes), then enabling XDR or MDR on any other customer tenant will enable these add-ons for the 'parent' tenant as well (this is known as "supersession"). While supersession applies to all Bitdefender add-ons, ATS is billed per device — irrespective of its usage. This means you'll be billed for those devices, even if they aren't being used.
Note: This illustration highlights the result of enabling the optional XDR and/or MDR add-ons, which both include ATS; the MSP will be billed for ATS for the devices under the MSP 'parent' tenant.
The intervention
To prevent these unexpected charges, we put a little block on the activation of the 2 add-ons that could've led to them (XDR and MDR). This block applied to users who had added devices to the 'parent' tenant only — this was done to save you the unfortunate surprise of additional, unwanted ATS charges on your devices.
Note: If you didn't have endpoints under the 'parent' tenant to begin with, and still can't see XDR or MDR, let us know
The strategy
To enable XDR and MDR add-ons for your Atera account:
1. Log in to your Bitdefender account
2. Create a 'dummy' customer tenant and move any devices from the 'parent' tenant to it. This could be a company where you test Bitdefender products on your own internal devices. Consider it your own private rebel base for your in-house devices. With this 'dummy' tenant in place, you'll be shielded from unexpected charges.
3. Contact support so we can enable XDR and MDR for you.
Sorry about that. Can you tell us why?
