Overview
Agent Version Management gives you visibility and control over how the Atera agent updates across your fleet. Instead of updates rolling out automatically with no way to preview or delay them, you can now see exactly which version each device is running, chose which version new agent installs start on, and decide how much of a delay you want before a new stable release reaches your whole fleet.
What you can do
- See the exact agent version and status (Latest, General Availability, Interim, or Legacy) for every device on your Devices page
- Set a delay window (7 or 28 days) before a new stable release rolls out fleet-wide, so you have time to validate it on a few devices first
- Manually update an individual device on demand - without waiting for the update to roll out
Before you begin
Important:
- Account admin role required.
- Devices must be running Agent v2.0 or later.
- Available on Enterprise and Superpower plans.
- For Windows, macOS, and Linux devices.
Getting started
- Go to Admin > My Account > Account Settings > Agents
- Under New Installation Version, chose:
- Latest: new agents start on the latest released version
- General Availability: new agents start on the latest stable, fully validated version
- Under Update Policy, chose:
- Upon Release: devices update as soon as a new stable version is available
- 7 or 28 day delay: devices wait the selected number of days after the new stable version is declared before updating
- Click Save. Your settings apply account-wide right away.
Understanding version labels
Every device on your Devices page shows a version label next to its agent version number:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| General Availability (GA) | The latest stable, fully validated version. This is what your agents update to automatically. |
| Latest | The most recently released version. Newer than GA, not yet fully validated. |
| Interim | An older version that's still supported, between GA and Latest. |
| Legacy | Agent v1. Some Legacy devices can be upgraded to v2+; this depends on your device configuration. |
Note: Version labels are managed by Atera, not something you configure directly.
Manually updating a device
Account admins can trigger an on-demand update from an individual device page, without waiting for the update to roll out.
Which versions are available depends on the device's current version:
| Device's current version | Can update to GA | Can update to the Latest |
|---|---|---|
| Older than GA | Yes | Yes |
| On GA | - | Yes |
| Interim (newer than GA) | - | Yes |
| Latest | - | - |
Note: Manual updates require the device to be online, and are available to account admins only.
Good to know
- Auto-updates never stop. This feature controls when and which version, not whether updates happen at all.
- Update policies apply to your whole account. Setting different policies per customer, site, or folder isn't available yet.
- If a device is offline when its update is due, it will update automatically the next time it comes online.
- Manual updates run immediately. They can't be scheduled for a later time.
Note: There's no rollback from the Latest to General Availability. If a device is manually updated to the Latest and you need to move it back, the agent needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled on GA.
FAQ
Will auto-updates continue, or does this turn them off?
Auto-updates continue as normal. This feature adds control over timing and version selection; the auto-update target is always the latest General Availability version.
Can I set different update policies for different customers or sites?
Not currently. Update policies apply at the account level only.
Can I roll back a device to an earlier version?
No, rollback isn't supported. If a device was manually updated to the Latest and you need to revert, uninstall the agent and reinstall it while your account is set to General Availability. You can also contact our support team for help with this.
What happens to devices running Agent v1?
They show a Legacy label on the Devices page. Some v1 devices can be upgraded to v2 or later; whether that option is available depends on your device configuration.
What if the Latest and General Availability are the same version?
Then both settings behave identically; the same installer is served either way, until Atera releases a new Latest version ahead of GA.
Can my technicians (non-admins) see agent versions?
Yes. Anyone with access to the Devices page can see the version number. On Enterprise and Superpower plans, version labels are visible to non-admins as well. The option to manually update a device, and the admin settings, are only available to account admins.
What do I see if I'm not on Enterprise or Superpower?
You'll see the agent version number on the Devices page, but not the version label, manual update option, or the admin settings.
If something doesn't look right
Don't see the Agent settings section
Confirm your account is on Enterprise or Superpower, and that you're logged in as an account admin.
Manual update option is grayed out
Check that the device is online and that you're logged in as an account admin. If the device is already on the Latest, or on an Interim newer than GA, there's no newer version to update to.
Device shows Legacy with no update option
The device is on Agent v1 and isn't currently eligible for an upgrade path. Reach out to support if you think this is unexpected.
Devices updated earlier than expected
Check whether a device was manually updated, or whether your Update Policy is set to Upon Release rather than a delay window.
