Hyper-V supports both in-place restores (performed to the original location) and restores to a new location. In case of an in-place restore, the original Hyper-V machine must be powered off at the time of the restore (otherwise it won't be possible to overwrite it).
You can recover any of the following:
- the whole virtual machine
- one of its disks
- files and folders from a virtual disk (starting from version 15.6 released in June 2015)
The recovery of individual files and folders has some additional requirements:
- The Virtual Drive tool (version 15.6 or higher) must be installed and running.
- The file system on the computer where the Online Backup Client is installed must support the file systems in the virtual machine that is being recovered (for example, NTFS or FAT). This is necessary to be able to expand the contents of the virtual disks.
- The virtual disks you are going to recover have been properly backed up (as the Hyper-V data source in the Online Backup Client).
Starting the virtual machine after recovery
In most cases, you'll be able to start the recovered Hyper-V machine in the same way you have started the original one. Sometimes, however, you might see an error message prompting you to adjust some settings. The message can appear on virtual machines that are located in different networks.
- Open Hyper-V Manager.
- Right-click the virtual machine that hasn't managed to start normally. Choose Settings from the context menu.
- From the left menu, choose Hardware > Network Adapter.
- From the Network list, choose "Configuration error" and specify the configuration of the network adapter. Alternatively, you can choose "Not connected" to disable network adapter usage.
- Restart the recovered virtual machine.
