In addition to enabling monitoring of your end users' computers and servers (via installed agents), Atera also enables monitoring of printers, RAIDs, routers, switches, and other SNMP devices. The first step in monitoring SNMP devices is adding the devices to Atera. Learn how to add new SNMP devices to Atera.
Once your devices have been added, you can manually add OIDs (Object Identifiers) to each device, for the specific parameters you wish to monitor—or you can save time by creating SNMP monitoring templates, for application to all SNMP devices. You can create specific templates for monitoring different devices—for example, a 'printer monitoring template' and a 'switch monitoring template' etc. Additionally, you can borrow or share templates on Atera's Shared SNMP Templates Library.
Create an SNMP Template
You can create an SNMP monitoring template that can be applied to your SNMP devices.
1. From Admin, on the side panel, click SNMP Templates.
The SNMP Templates page appears.
2. Click New template
The New SNMP Template form appears.
3. Fill in the form:
- Enter a Template Name
- Select the SNMP Device Type you wish to monitor
- Enter a Description (optional)
- Enter a MIB Source URL (optional). This will appear as a clickable link in the template.
- Add tags, by clicking the icon, for easier searching later (optional)
4. When done, click Save
The SNMP Template has been created.
Add OIDs to the new template
The OID Values provide near, real-time status of the specific OID on the device. When adding an OID here, you will see the OID number displayed along with its current value on the device. The Monitored OIDs are where you can set up alert conditions to receive alerts when the 'Condition Value' is matched.
1. Click Add OID, in the OID Values section.
2. Enter the OID (and optional description) and click Add
1. Click Add OID, in the Monitored OID section.
2. Fill in the form:
- Enter the OID
- Enter your specific Condition Type and Condition Value (to set up the alert condition)
- Select the Alert Severity if the specified condition is matched
- Enter a Description (optional)
- Select the OID Type (Leaf or Parent OID)
Note: Parent and leaf OIDs (like all MIB objects) are logically organized in a hierarchy like a tree structure. A parent OID branches off into leaf OIDs. A leaf OID is the actual MIB object and has no children. If you select the parent OID, an alert will appear if the value of any of the leaf OIDs under it matches the condition.
- Click Add
The monitored OID is added to the template. Once the template is applied to devices, alerts will appear when the specified condition is matched.
6. When done, click Save
The OIDs are added, and the new template is ready to be applied to SNMP devices.
Create an SNMP template from a device's OID configuration
You can also create an SNMP template from a device's OID configuration.
1. From the Devices page (on the side panel), click on the specific SNMP device you wish to monitor.
2. Click Save as SNMP Template
3. Fill in the New SNMP Template form:
- Enter a Template Name
- Select the SNMP Device Type you wish to monitor
- Enter a Description (optional)
- Enter a MIB Source URL (optional)
- Add tags, by clicking the icon, for easier searching later (optional)
4. Click Save
The new template is created and can be found on the SNMP Templates page.
Apply an SNMP Template to a device
The next step is to apply the SNMP monitoring Template to the specific SNMP devices you wish to monitor.
1. From the Devices page (on the side panel), click on the specific SNMP device you wish to monitor.
The device console page appears.
2. Click on Import SNMP Template
The Import SNMP Template page appears.
3. In the My SNMP Templates tab, click Select, next to the specific template you wish to apply.
Note: Alternatively, you can select the Existing Device tab, to import the OID monitoring configuration from an existing device and apply to your device.
The Template appears.
4. Select the desired import and override options, then click Import (you may need to expand the options by clicking on More options).
The SNMP Template is now applied to the device, and monitoring has begun.
Note: It may take up to 2 minutes for the OIDs Values to populate, and when applicable, alerts will appear in the device console as well as on the Alerts page.
